The Tower With David’s Name… But Not His Hammer

Standing here, I couldn’t help but smile—history has a funny way of keeping us humble. This tower wasn’t David’s, but Jerusalem still beats with his heart.

The Real History Behind the Tower of David

The August photo was taken at the Tower of David in Jerusalem, a site many assume was built by King David himself.
But historically, King David never built this tower.
It was constructed nearly 2,800 years later under Herod the Great, whose palace once stretched across today’s Jaffa Gate area and Armenian Quarter.

From Herod’s Palace to a Roman Fortress

After the decline of Herod’s rule, Rome took control of Judea.
Under Roman governance—especially under leaders like Pontius Pilate—this fortress became the military headquarters in Jerusalem.
Because of its strategic location, almost every empire that ruled Jerusalem used this site as their operational base.

Why It’s Called the Tower of David

In the 4th century AD, Byzantine Christians misidentified the site as David’s royal palace.
They renamed it the Tower of David—a title that stuck for centuries.

The irony is striking:
Herod built it for his own glory, yet his name faded.
David never touched these stones, yet his name endured.

King David vs. Herod the Great — A Tale of Two Kings

Standing between Herod’s stones and David’s legacy highlights just how different these two rulers were.

King David Herod the Great
Heart & Motivation Pursued God; worship, obedience, repentance. Pursued glory; ruled through fear.
Legacy Eternal covenant; beloved for 3,000 years. Temporary political impact; remembered for cruelty.
Leadership Style Shepherd-king; humble and God-seeking. Paranoid, political, self-preserving.
What They Built A spiritual inheritance of worship and prayer. Massive buildings, palaces, fortresses.
Divine View A man after God’s own heart. No divine commendation.

This is why Israel remembers David—not for monuments, but for a heart that aligned with God.

David’s Heart for Jerusalem

David loved God’s presence, longed for this city, and wrote psalms that still shape Jewish worship today.
His spiritual legacy continues to draw people back to Jerusalem in prayer and devotion.

God’s Covenant With David Still Stands (2 Samuel 7)

As I stood here, I remembered God’s promise to David:

“I have been with you wherever you have gone…
Now I will make your name great…
and I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so they may have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.”

Jerusalem isn’t just history—
it’s God’s story still unfolding.

A Prayer for Israel Based on God’s Promise

“Lord, You have been with Israel wherever they have gone.”
So today, we ask:
✨ Surround Israel with Your protection.
✨ Let Your presence be their shelter and strength.
✨ Break the power of fear, terror, and destruction.
✨ Rise up worshippers with a heart like David.

As you hang this calendar on your wall, remember:
every image is more than a photograph…
it’s an invitation to pray for Israel all year long.
